The river breaks its way through the Rhenish Slate Mountains to enter the incomparably beautiful UNESCO World Heritage region of the Middle Rhine Valley. This region is famous for the many castles atop the hills on both banks, and for the Lorelei Rock. Countless songs, including the Song of the Nibelungs about Siegfried the dragon slayer, have been written about this section of the river.
